Mercury Prize.
This is a lovely collection of traditional folk songs of the British Isles, rendered by two women with classically pure yet earth-bound voices and who play guitar, piano, flute, clarinet and soprano sax. Though Rusby and Roberts sing songs about life long ago, their themes prove that human emotions and situations have changed little over the centuries. "The Queen And The Soldier" and "The Constant Lovers" are story-songs that take you away to another time, yet heartache and the resistance to the idea/futility of war are with us still. The music has a courtly feel, drawing from both the folk and classical strains of the Elizabethan age, as well as traditional Irish folk. Saxophone and cello give the tunes a contemporary feel without getting in the way of the vocals' plaintive edge. Rusby and Roberts present songs that are not unlike roses--beautiful and fragile, but with thorns.
