Combining the more anthemic elements of John Mellancamp with the visceral snarl of Steve Earle and the musical sheen of Tom Petty, Mike Plume Band is a true standout in an all too crowded roots rock idiom. The muscular driving rock of "Rattle the Cage," the fist pumping "Wind At My Back" and the excellent slide guitar in "Something to Say," which could easily pass for an Earle outtake, all add up to an album that carefully balances just the right amount of country twang and rock propulsiveness. The shuffling drums of the moody "If There Ever Was a Fool," the Neil Young-ish harmonica lead on "Alcohol," as well as the explosive rockabilly of "Rich Man" and the elements of dixie-land jazz on "Take Me With You" further showcase an impressive balance of mature songwriting and youthful exuberance. Everything taken into consideration, the level of tunefulness and unrestrained energy make Song & Dance, Man a true keeper. - allmusic.com
