Don’t Fight The Inevitable is pianist/composer John Escreet’s eagerly awaited follow up to his award-winning debut album Consequences. The new recording features David Binney (alto saxophone/electronics), Ambrose Akinmusire (trumpet), Matt Brewer (double bass) and Nasheet Waits (drums). Escreet’s sophomore release contains all new original material with the only exception being an inventive reinterpretation of Muhal Richard Abram’s Charlie In The Parker. Don’t Fight The Inevitable continues John’s concept of documenting a working band – The project was recorded in New York City immediately upon returning from a European tour with this exact ensemble. Escreet says “I wrote the new material specifically for this project, with these extraordinary musicians in mind. Rehearsing the material and then playing it on the road for nine consecutive nights really allowed us to explore and get inside the music. Performing the materiel for such a stretch of time in a live setting opened up the compositions in ways I had never even imagined. It also granted us the kind of freedom that is only possible once everybody knows the music REALLY well.” Escreet goes on to say “When we recorded the material it felt like we were still on tour – in fact, the opening track of the album is the very first thing we laid down in the studio – it has that ‘fresh-from-the-road’ vibe.” Don’t Fight The Inevitable reflects John Escreet's broad range of musical tastes and influences, as well as his ever-evolving skills as a highly original composer/pianist at the forefront of contemporary music. Innovation comes along only so often in the world of music and pianist/composer John Escreet is just that – an innovator of music. His imaginative style and openness to the creative process places him on a level that many of us do not and will not see often. Don’t Fight The Inevitable will make its mark as one of the groundbreaking recordings of 2010.
