Simon Steensland is a Swedish composer and self-taught multi-instrumentalist, though he started as a drummer at the age of 17. He releases both solo albums as well as composing for theater. His first solo release was in 1993, The Simon Lonesome Combat Ensemble, which he then followed up on with more albums, each of which had several usual musicians playing: drummer Morgan Agren and keyboards/piano player Mats Oberg. The music was said to combine elements of jazz, neo-classical, rock and folk with a wide variety of instruments and to be influenced by Univers Zero, Art Zoyd, Present etc.
Album Review:
My first impression of The Zombie Hunter was, "Hey, it's kind of like if Univers Zero used lots of keyboards and vibraphones and sounded annoying." Unfortunately, this impression has proven difficult to shake. While Steensland is a pretty awesome drummer — he channels Daniel Denis to an almost disturbing extent at times on this album — I'm not quite convinced by his compositions and arrangements. The material on The Zombie Hunter is classic UZ-style RIO, a bit dark and dreary and full of twists and turns, but it's lacking in atmosphere and life. There's an extensive use of keyboard tones that are distracting at best and annoying at worst, and I found myself wishing the more organic instruments credited to the various musicians were used much more extensively.
Timbres and orchestration aside, the biggest complaint for me remains with the compositions, some of which have promise but just don't seem to be executed with much vigor ("Parade"), others which take not particularly inspired ideas and ride them too long ("Conversation With Ant," "The Last Waltz"). Some RIO-heads seem to really enjoy this album, and I imagine Steensland's memorable drumming has a lot to do with that. I'll be happy to hand my copy over to those folks; this one doesn't do anything for me.
